Rabbi Miller writes a very personal, intimate story about her journey to become a female rabbi. It is touching in its intimacy, reflections and in her fight for injustice suffered in the world generally, and in her carrier in particular.I find the memoir is lacking in her relationship vis-a-vis her husband and children, the emphasis is on her spiritual growth and career. However, a worthwhile read about the place of women in the Jewish world, orthodox, or otherwise.

Excellent spiritual memoir of a pioneer contemporary woman rabbi challenging obstacles and exploring many different ways of being of service to the wider community of Jews and others. Negatives were turned into positives with a strong sense of the purpose behind them. Positives were celebrated as helping interconnection among people.Powerful, insightful and inspirational--I thoroughly enjoyed this well-written book and highly recommend it!
Refreshing, inspirational, engaging and instructive. As a non-Jew, I felt privileged to "join the family" and gain a deeper understanding of what it means to be brought up in an orthodox home. The exploration of tensions between Tamara's ultra-orthodox sister and herself was fascinating and, at times, heart-breaking. The book left me with much to think about and so much appreciation for the pioneer women among us who have refused to take no for an answer. A very good read.

I received an advance copy if this book, and figured I'd skim through it. Instead, I found myself completely engaged, and read through it singlemindedly with every spare moment. Rabbi Miller's story is one of courage and resilience. The subtitle is "a spiritual memoir" and certainly, it is that. But underlying that journey is the story of confronting the challenges of being a woman when so many institutions-marriage, parenting, job security, religious patriarchy- place stumbling blocks in our way. What spoke to me personally is how Rabbi Miller reacted to these challenges with grace, ambition, and a problem-solving spirit, not with bitterness or rancor. It made me reflect on my own choices and opportunities for autonomy. And her writing style is so readable honest, just like her voice. I found myself gliding through the pages. I'm so happy that I read it.
It's inspiring to read how Rabbi Miller reflects on her hardships in her life in such a honest way. Rabbi Tamara Miller challenges us to reexamine events in our lives from the from prospective we view them. HerHer writing and her story is engaging , at times funny and inspiring .
